£11 Million Fund to Improve Freshwater Habitats (England – Specified Areas)

Farmers and land managers, community groups, councils, and other environmental or not-for-profit organisations in England can apply for a share of £11 million in government funding to improve freshwater habitats.

The Water Restoration Fund will support projects that restore and improve rivers' water environment and their headwaters, lakes, canals, ponds, wetlands and estuaries in specified geographical areas, using fines collected from water companies.

The water companies who have paid fines and penalties for environmental offences are:

  • Thames Water
  • Yorkshire Water
  • Anglian Water
  • United Utilities
  • South West Water

Projects could range from re-meandering rivers and restoring water-dependent habitats to removing barriers to fish migration and increasing sustainable public access to nature.

Two types of grants are available:

  • Development grants ranging from £75,000 to £250,000 will support organisations to build capability, and design and plan future projects
  • Delivery grants ranging from £500,000 to £2 million will support projects that are already planned

The closing date for applications is the 7th June 2024.
