Funding Available to Councils to Tackle Chewing Gum Pollution (UK)

Local Authorities throughout the UK can apply for a share of £1.65 million to combat the issue of chewing gum pollution. This fund has been made available through the second round of the Chewing Gum Task Force Grant Fund.

Grants of up to £25,000 can be used to finance street cleaning, as well as the acquisition of cleaning equipment. In addition, gum litter prevention packages that feature targeted behaviour change signage and advice are being offered at no cost to each council.

The previous year's fund was awarded to 53 councils, achieving an 80% reduction in gum littering within the first two months through a combination of targeted street cleaning and bespoke signage intended to encourage people to dispose of their gum in a bin.

This initiative welcomes applications from councils who are new to the scheme, as well as those who have previously received funding.

Applications close on the 6th April 2023 and decisions will be announced in May 2023.

Keep Britain Tidy is hosting a webinar on Tuesday 28th February at 11am for interested councils to learn more about what the Chewing Gum Task Force has achieved in year one, and how to apply for a grant in year two.
