“Compensating local communities for the impacts of aggregates extraction “

Many communities in Essex suffer the effects of gravel extraction, whether past or present, however carefully such activities are controlled and carried out. The County Council, supported by a grant from ‘Defra’, is now able to assist these communities by helping to fund projects or activities that will either help to alleviate the environmental effects of extraction or provide benefits to the affected community.

Projects could include almost anything but some possibilities are;
• Purchasing land for community use.
• Restoration of local landscape features.
• Enhancing local biodiversity.
• New play equipment for use by local groups.
• Repairing roads and verges along an old access route.
• Improving local rights of way.
To be considered for funding the project or activity must be in Essex and in an area that, at some point, has been affected by aggregate extraction. Projects should be those that would not otherwise have received funding in the absence of this scheme and must not include activities that are part of any of the mining operator’s obligations in relation to planning conditions.
The maximum grant is expected to be around £10000. There is no fixed proportion of grant to total cost. There is no minimum grant
Projects don’t have to be new, existing projects can also benefit as long as the work can be completed and invoiced by January 2006. Funding is also available for 2006 -to 2007 so work could be split if the project is particularly large and complex or some of the work cannot be completed by January 2006.

From time to time Essex County Council may need information from the project promoter in order to fulfil our duties as grant distributors to ‘Defra’. Occasionally access to project details and facilities may be required to support this information.

Any person or organisation who is interested in applying or would like further information should contact Essex County Council. Applications must be in writing and include a rough outline of the project, its location, likely cost and the contact details.
