Youth Hostel Offers Bursary Scheme for Towards Residential Stays (England & Wales)

The Youth Hostels Association (England & Wales) (YHA) is offering support through its YHA Breaks Programme, which provides subsidised or fully funded residential stays at YHA hostels for young people and families who might otherwise be unable to afford a trip away.

Applications are invited from schools, home schooling networks, registered charities, community groups and voluntary organisations that work with young people or families experiencing disadvantage. Eligible beneficiaries typically include young people aged 8–18, as well as families facing challenges such as financial hardship, disability, bereavement, caring responsibilities or homelessness.

Funding is provided mainly as subsidised residential breaks at YHA hostels across England and Wales. Support may cover accommodation and, in some cases, meals and activity costs. Grants commonly cover up to around 50% of the cost of a residential stay, although some groups may receive higher levels of support depending on need.

The programme supports educational and outdoor residential experiences, including school trips, youth group activity breaks, and respite stays for families in difficult circumstances.

Previously supported projects have included school residentials focused on outdoor learning, trips designed to improve young people’s confidence and wellbeing, and short breaks for families experiencing crisis or hardship.

There is no fixed application deadline, and organisations can apply throughout the year via the YHA website. Funding decisions are made on a rolling basis.
