Funding for Community Gardens to Iimprove Green Spaces (England, Wales and Northern Ireland)

The National Garden Scheme has opened applications for its 2027 Community Garden Grants, offering awards of £1,500 to £5,000 for community gardening projects. Supported by the Julia Rausing Trust, the programme aims to increase access to green spaces and the health and social benefits of gardening.

Funding is available to established community groups, registered charities and CICs in England, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands. Projects must involve an existing or proposed community garden, allotment or similar horticultural site with secure access. Local authorities are not eligible.

Examples of projects and costs that can be supported include:

  • creating or improving community gardens, allotments and growing spaces
  • installing flower or vegetable beds
  • purchasing plants and containers
  • providing greenhouses, polytunnels and sheds
  • carrying out hard landscaping
  • installing seating and social areas
  • purchasing hand tools and some garden power tools, such as strimmers
  • creating projects that encourage community participation, social interaction and gardening
  • developing spaces that improve biodiversity and wildlife habitats
  • purchasing materials for providing refreshments, although food and drink themselves cannot be funded. National Garden Scheme

Previously funded examples include transforming neglected land into community allotments, creating therapeutic and wellbeing gardens, developing vegetable and wildflower areas, creating accessible community spaces, and establishing gardens where people can grow and cook food together.

The deadline for applications is 12 noon, 30 October 2026.
