Funding to Expand Early Years Childcare Places (England)

The Department for Education (DfE) has announced that the School-based Nursery Capital Grant 2027–2030 is now open for applications.  This scheme is designed to expand access to early-years education across England. The initiative aims to increase the availability of high-quality nursery places, particularly in areas where demand for childcare is growing or provision is limited.

Applications are open to local authorities in England, which will submit proposals on behalf of eligible delivery partners such as state-funded primary schools, maintained nursery schools and Best Start Family Hub sites.

The grant provides capital funding for building and infrastructure projects rather than a fixed per-project award. Funding levels will depend on approved proposals and demonstrated need. However, the DfE expect the majority of schemes to cost no more than £1 million.

Eligible activities include:

  • Creation of new school-based nursery provision
  • Expansion or refurbishment of existing nursery facilities
  • Capital works that improve access to early-years childcare
  • Projects supporting increased childcare capacity for young children

Local authorities must submit completed proposals by 5pm on 30 September 2026. Approved projects are expected to be delivered between 2027 and 2030.
