Funding to Promote the use of the Gaelic Language (Scotland)

Public bodies in Scotland can apply for grants of up to £25,000, covering up to 80% of project costs, to support the implementation of their Gaelic Language Plans.

The funding is being made available through the Gaelic Plans Fund and this funding round relates to the Projects stream of this fund. This stream is open to all other public bodies, allowing them to apply for one-year funding for up to three projects each, to be delivered between August 2025 and August 2026.

Eligible projects typically align with the following objectives:

  • Enhancing Gaelic Usage: Initiatives that encourage the use of Gaelic within communities, workplaces, and public services, thereby increasing daily interactions in the language.
  • Expanding Gaelic Learning: Projects that provide opportunities for individuals of all ages to learn Gaelic, including educational programs, workshops, and resources for both beginners and advanced learners.
  • Promoting a Positive Image of Gaelic: Efforts that raise awareness and appreciation of Gaelic, such as cultural events, media productions, and campaigns that highlight the language's significance in Scotland's heritage.

In addition to the project stream, the Gaelic Plans Fund offers a Strategic Stream: This stream offers six local authorities—Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, The Highland Council, Argyll and Bute Council, Glasgow City Council, City of Edinburgh Council, and North Lanarkshire Council—the opportunity to apply for three-year funding to advance Gaelic development in alignment with the National Gaelic Language Plan and their respective Gaelic Language Plans.

The closing date for applications is 3pm on the 6th May 2025.
