Community groups across Scotland can apply for a share of £8 million in government funding to support renewable energy generation projects.
The Community Energy Generation Growth Fund will help local communities install wind turbines, solar panels, and other renewable energy systems, such as hydropower schemes. Successful applicants will be able to generate income from their projects, including by selling excess energy.
Administered by Local Energy Scotland, the fund provides grants, advice, and loans for various project stages, from feasibility to construction.
Projects supported will need to:
- Install over 50kW of renewable energy, either at a site or over multiple sites, for example multiple building roofs
- Generate and provide electricity through a connection to sell to the national grid; or sell to a local energy user with enough demand; or power your own building
- OR be an electricity generation project led by a community group that owns and operates its own independent electricity grid because it can’t connect to the national grid
- OR be an existing renewables project that is repowering
The fund, which has received £4 million from the UK Government’s Great British Energy firm, is part of the Scottish Government’s Community and Renewable Energy Scheme (CARES).
The closing date for applications is the 25th June 2025.
