Funding to Help Museums Build Financial Sustainability (Scotland)

Grants of up to £100,000 are available for accredited and non-accredited museums in Scotland to help them address issues that prevent them from building financial sustainability.

The Unlocking Potential Fund is part of the wider Museum Futures Programme by Museums Galleries Scotland. It will help museums tackle challenges such as:

  • outdated or inefficient systems
  • websites that do not effectively attract visitors or support fundraising efforts
  • a lack of expertise or a skills deficit preventing the development of appropriate strategies for specific areas of work

The fund aims to unlock potential and strengthen the financial resilience of museums, enabling them to move forward with strategic development.

Formally constituted groups of museums (e.g. geographical forums) are also eligible to apply.

Applicants must complete an organisational health checker before applying. Applications will be assessed on a rolling basis, with decisions provided within eight weeks of submission.

Projects can last up to 2 years and must begin within 6 months of the award date.

The fund will remain open until February 2026.
