Grants of Up to £100,000 for Organisations Supporting Young People (London)

The Portal Trust is inviting applications from organisations delivering educational projects for young Londoners. The Trust supports organisations and individuals to help young people in London, particularly those from disadvantaged or low-income backgrounds, access educational opportunities.

Funding is available for charities and education providers whose projects support children and young people under 25 from low-income or disadvantaged backgrounds in inner London. Applications must align with one of the Trust’s funding themes, which include

  • disengagement from education,
  • vocational pathways,
  • scholarships and bursaries,
  • innovation, confidence and resilience,
  • and the Portal network.

The Trust regularly considers applications costing between £5,000 and £100,000. Funding is not normally available for general fundraising appeals, work replacing statutory funding, retrospective costs, or capital projects where these are the sole focus.

Key points include:

  • projects must take place in the Trust’s inner London area of benefit;
  • applicants should complete the eligibility quiz before applying;
  • the process has three stages: Expression of Interest, full application by invitation, and decision;

The Trust has awarded £11 million in grants to 152 organisations across London in the last five years.

These have included:

  • The Yard Theatre, which provides free theatre, arts and leadership workshops to help young people build confidence and move into higher education or employment.
  • CareTrade’s Autism Project, which received funding for music equipment for its Live Music Band project. The project helps young people with autism aged 18 to 25 build skills and experience linked to employment.
  • Sunbeams London, which received a £20,000 one-year grant in Hackney to help five Orthodox Jewish schools improve girls’ wellbeing, confidence and resilience.
  • London Music Fund scholarships, which have supported children whose families are struggling to pay for music lessons.

Applications can be submitted at any time and the Grants Committee meets in June, October and March.
