UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) has announced a new £18 million funding call to support gambling harms research.

The Gambling Harms Research Grants programme will support research projects that improve understanding of gambling-related harms or develop ways to prevent and treat them.

Applications must be led by an eligible UK organisation, such as a university or research organisation, with charities, social enterprises, and third-sector groups eligible as partners or co-leads.

Interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary proposals are encouraged, and applications must involve people with lived and learned experience.

Projects can last up to three years, with a full economic cost of up to £2 million. UKRI will fund 80% of the cost.

Supported costs include:

• salary contributions for project lead and co-leads
• staff costs
• equipment
• travel and subsistence
• other directly incurred costs
• estates and indirect costs

The opportunity is being delivered in partnership with the Arts and Humanities Research Council, the Economic and Social Research Council and the Medical Research Council as part of UKRI’s wider Research Programme on Gambling.

Applications close at 4pm on 8 December 2026. Awards are expected to be offered in April 2027. Projects must start by 1 October 2027.
