Funding to Help Create Thriving Welsh Speaking Communities (North-West & South-West Wales)

The Welsh Government is inviting community groups in Welsh-speaking areas to apply for grants of up to £10,000 to help them set up new or support the growth of co-operatives, social enterprises, and community-led housing projects.

The funding is available through the Perthyn Small Grants scheme, which is part of the Welsh Language Communities Housing Plan.

Perthyn supports the following aims:

  • to help sustain Welsh-speaking communities by establishing new social enterprises and co-operatives
  • to help sustain Welsh-speaking communities by developing solutions to support local affordable housing
  • to help sustain communities by means of engaging and benefit from wider Welsh Government and other funding support to ensure that Welsh-speaking communities continue to thrive
  • create Welsh-speaking spaces – where the Welsh-language is central to the administrative structure and an integral part of the initiative

The grant aims to help create economic opportunities, provide affordable housing, and support Welsh-speaking communities with high numbers of second homes.

Eligible groups from Pembrokeshire, Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Gwynedd, Anglesey or Conwy can apply.

Previous projects supported include:

  • Egni Trefin received over £10,000 to establish a community enterprise to explore ways of generating renewable energy
  • Menter y Tŵr in Pwllheli received funding to buy and run a community-owned hotel
  • the Clynfyw community received funding to purchase a farm with land to rent, cottages for local people, and work

The scheme is administered by Cwmpas, with applications open until the 3rd November 2024.
