Peatland Restoration Grant Opens Applications (Wales)

Landowners, farmers and environmental groups in Wales are being urged to apply for a new round of funding to restore the nation’s degraded peatlands, a crucial step in tackling climate change and protecting biodiversity. The Peatland Restoration Grant, offered by Natural Resources Wales (NRW) and backed by the Welsh Government, provides capital grants of between £10,000 and £250,000 to support projects that rewet, repair and sustainably manage peatland ecosystems.

Total funding available id £750,000.

The grant is open to public, private, and third-sector organisations as well as partnerships that can deliver projects improving the condition of peatlands across Wales.

All projects will need to address one or more of the National Peatland Action Programme priorities:

  • Peatland erosion
  • Peatland drainage
  • Sustainable management of blanket peats
  • Sustainable management of lowland peats
  • Restoration of afforested peatlands
  • Gradual restoration of our highest carbon emitting peatlands

Peatlands, which store more carbon than forests, have been heavily degraded by centuries of drainage and land-use change. Restoring them is seen as a cost-effective way to cut greenhouse gas emissions and build climate resilience.

The closing date for applications is 23:59 on 14 January 2026.
