Modern Foreign Languages Scholarship Programme (England)

A scholarship programme designed to address the shortage of modern foreign language teachers in England is expected to open shortly.

The British Council Languages Teacher Training Scholarships programme offers financial support worth £22,000, along with professional development opportunities for individuals who want a career as a secondary school language teacher.

To be eligible, applicants must have:

  • a 2:1, or predicted 2:1 in a Bachelor of Honours degree (or equivalent) or a relevant PhD or Master's degree, or recognised equivalent in French, German or Spanish
  • secured a place on an eligible non-salaried languages teacher training course in England for the 2026/27 academic year by September 2026

Applicants with a bachelor of honours degree (or equivalent) in another subject at a 2.1 or a 2.2 (or predicted 2.2) may also be considered if they can demonstrate significant knowledge of the target languages.

International applicants are welcome but must ensure they meet UK training entry and visa requirements.

Further details will be made available when the fund opens to applications in May.
