Funding Available for Ultra Long Duration Energy Storage Studies (UK)

Innovate UK has announced that the Ultra Long Duration Energy Storage Project Development Studies competition is open for applications. UK-registered businesses can apply for up to £3 million to support Phase 1 project development studies for electrochemical ultra-long-duration energy storage demonstrators in the UK. Innovate UK is part of UK Research and Innovation and supports business-led innovation across the UK.

Grants of between £350,000 and £700,000 are available for projects lasting three to nine months. Projects must support the development, scale-up, and UK manufacture of technologies that can deliver cost-effective power to the grid for at least 100 continuous hours, with a working life of at least 25 years.

Funding can be used for feasibility studies covering:

  • technology assessment;
  • engineering design;
  • cost and scale-up roadmaps;
  • market assessment;
  • development, manufacturing and supply chain plans.

Projects must be led by a UK registered business. Collaborators can include UK registered businesses, academic institutions, charities, not-for-profits, public sector organisations and RTOs. Applications close at 11am on 30 September 2026. Applicants will be notified on 2 November 2026, and projects must start by 1 January 2027.
