Funding for Africa-UK Physics Research Projects (UK)

UK research organisations can apply for a share of £5 million in funding for collaborative physics-led projects addressing challenges affecting sub-Saharan Africa.

The funding, which is made available by the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), will support researchers from the UK and sub-Saharan Africa (Ghana, Kenya, Rwanda, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda) to work collaboratively to address the challenges of:

  • climate change
  • energy
  • capacity building across African economies

The funding will support:

  • collaborative projects strengthening relationships between UK and SSA researchers
  • projects that support gender inclusivity
  • projects that strengthen existing in-country partnerships
  • projects that support networking, capacity building, training and upskilling in physics
  • projects that strengthen existing in-country partnerships and support research-related knowledge exchange and impact activities
  • projects that address challenges specific to the African context

STFC will fund 80% of the full economic cost of ten to fifteen projects lasting up to 24 months. STFC will fund 100% of the costs for international applicants.

The Africa-UK Physics Partnership Programme closes to applications at 4pm on the 17th September 2024.
