Grants of Up to £1 Million Available for Listed Places of Worship (England)

Grants of between £10,000 and £1 million are available through the Places of Worship Renewal Fund to support urgent repairs and essential improvements to listed places of worship in England.

The £92 million fund is financed by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport and delivered by Historic England, the public body responsible for championing and protecting England’s historic environment.

The fund is open to listed active places of worship of any faith or denomination. Buildings must be Grade I, Grade II* or Grade II listed, based in England, and used for worship at least six times a year, or be owned by a charity caring for historic places of worship and open to the public at least six times a year.

Funding can support capital works that keep buildings safe, open and in public use. Eligible work includes:

  • urgent fabric repairs, including roofs, masonry, timber and drainage;
  • essential improvements such as electrical upgrades, heating, toilets and step-free access, where part of a wider repair project;
  • professional fees, surveys and non-recoverable VAT.

Priority will be given to projects in areas with the greatest deprivation and need for investment, and to those offering strong community benefit, urgent repair need, deliverability and value for money.

Applications are made through a two-stage process. Round 2 expressions of interest open on 4 September 2026 and close at 5pm on 2 October 2026. Successful applicants will be invited to submit a full application by 5pm on 18 November 2026.
