The National Lottery Community Fund has launched a new £10 million programme to help young children in Wales spend more time in nature.
The initiative, called Meithrin Natur, is aimed at babies, children under five, and expecting parents. It is particularly focused on families who may face barriers such as poverty, discrimination, or disadvantage.
The programme will support projects that give children and their caregivers greater access to outdoor spaces, including parks, woodlands, wetlands, and gardens. It is also designed to bring together organisations working in early years care with those experienced in outdoor learning and environmental projects.
Funding will be provided in two stages. Partnerships can first apply for up to £25,000 to develop their ideas and plan their projects. Those that progress can then apply for up to £2 million to deliver projects lasting up to six years.
Only not-for-profit organisations will be able to lead applications. Eligible groups include registered charities, community organisations, charitable incorporated organisations, and community interest companies. Partnerships must show they have expertise in both early years development and nature-based activities. Schools, individuals, local authorities, and profit-making companies will not be able to apply as lead organisations.
Examples of projects that could be funded include nature-based play for under-fives, outdoor learning sessions for families, support activities delivered in green spaces, and schemes to help communities with limited access to the outdoors make use of local natural environments.
The closing date for applications is 12pm on 1 December 2025.
