£10 Million Scheme to Help Pupils Boost Core Skills (England)

In response to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Department for Education has announced a £10 million funding initiative to provide focused English and Maths catch-up sessions for pupils starting primary and secondary school.

The scheme, which will begin in the Autumn term 2021, will provide specialist training and materials, including grants of up to £6,000 for each eligible school for validated phonics programmes, along with resources, and additional training and support days for teachers to support the delivery of these programmes.

The Maths programmes are based on the department’s successful “Teaching for Mastery” programme and curriculum guidance. The training and resources will be provided to participating schools by the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching Maths (NCETM), in partnership with local Maths Hubs across the country.

Priority will be given to schools with high proportions of children from disadvantaged backgrounds.
