Funding for Publically Accessible Automated External Defibrillators (England)

Community organisations across England are invited to apply for funding to acquire Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) for public spaces. The funding is made available through the Department of Health and Social Care's (DHSC) Community Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Fund, which aims to distribute 2,000 AEDs nationwide. This initiative seeks to enhance public access to life-saving equipment, particularly in areas with high footfall or vulnerable populations.

Eligible applicants include charities, local government bodies, sports clubs, and other community-focused organisations based in England. However, schools and academies are excluded, as they are covered under a separate Department for Education scheme.

To qualify, organisations must commit to installing the defibrillator in an external, publicly accessible location available 24 hours a day. Additionally, they must provide an electrical power source for the defibrillator cabinet's light and heater to maintain optimal operating conditions. Applicants are also required to contribute approximately £750 in match funding towards the cost of the AED.

The total funding pool for this programme is £1 million, with the DHSC collaborating with London Hearts to manage the grant distribution. Applications are assessed on a first-come, first-served basis, focusing on areas identified as having the greatest need for defibrillators. Organisations interested in applying should complete the enquiry form available on the official website. For further assistance, applicants can contact the grant information hotline at 0300 302 1388 or email hello@defibgrant.co.uk.

The application process is currently open, and organisations are encouraged to apply promptly, as the fund will close once all available defibrillators have been allocated. Successful applicants will receive guidance on installing the AED, which includes an external locked cabinet.
