Funding to Empowering Black Researcher Communities (UK)

Do it Now Now has launched Innovate Now with Wellcome, a £1 million grant and capacity-building programme designed to strengthen Black-led research community initiatives in the UK.

The funding aims to address a critical gap in the UK research ecosystem by providing sustained, accessible support for Black and Mixed Black heritage researchers, as well as the Black-led initiatives that champion their careers. The programme is designed to support initiatives to build capacity, strengthen leadership and governance, and expand their ability to improve the lives and research careers of Black Heritage and Mixed Black Heritage people.

45 multi-year grants of between £13,000 and £48,000 will be awarded, alongside practical support to strengthen organisational resilience and long-term sustainability.

Awards are tiered into 3 groups:

  • Group 1 - £13,000 over two years - for unincorporated/unregistered initiatives,
  • sole traders, and for registered initiatives with income under £10,000
  • Group 2 - £21,000 over three years - for registered initiatives with £10,000 to £30,000 income
  • Group 3 - £48,000 over three years - for registered initiatives with £30,000 to
  • £150,000 income

The programme is open to UK-based Black-led initiatives with annual income of up to £150,000, including charities, CICs, social enterprises, unregistered groups, sole traders, and university-affiliated or community-based initiatives.

Organisations should be majority Black-led, and have demonstrable experience supporting Black heritage or Mixed Black heritage researchers or students.

There is a multi-stage application process, with expressions of interest accepted until the 25th March 2026.
