Funding to Encourage Young People to Study Science Subjects (UK)

The Ironmongers’ Company has announced the opening of its STEM Projects funding programme, offering grants of up to £10,000 to support initiatives that encourage young people to engage with science and pursue STEM-related education or training.

The programme focuses particularly on Materials Science, including the study and application of materials through physics, chemistry, mathematics, engineering, and vocational disciplines. Funding is intended for projects that inspire young people aged 11 to 18 from disadvantaged backgrounds, or educators working directly with this age group.

Applications are open to registered or exempt UK charities only. Schools are not eligible to apply directly, although charities working with schools may be supported. Projects must take place in the UK, with a preference for urban areas outside London, especially in the North and the Midlands.

Funded activities should go beyond what is normally covered by school or government budgets and must have clear aims, measurable outcomes, and opportunities for repeated engagement. Equipment can be funded where it forms part of a specific programme of activity, but capital or building projects are not supported.

The next closing date for applications is 31 January 2026. Applications should be no more than four sides of A4 and will be considered by the Foundation Committee, which meets two to three times a year.
