The Department for Education has launched a £15 million funding initiative to support up to 300 school-based nurseries across England. State-funded primary Schools that already offer some early education can apply for capital grants of up to £150,000 to establish or expand nurseries. Projects must use surplus space in the school building (including at primary-phase satellite sites).

The aim is to ensure more children have access to high-quality early education, helping them achieve better outcomes as they transition into primary school. By focusing on areas with the most need, the government hopes to address educational inequality and improve support for children from disadvantaged backgrounds.

This initiative is part of a broader effort to increase educational standards and provide crucial early support to young children. The grant will cover a range of activities, including expanding nursery spaces, improving existing facilities, and ensuring high-quality staff training and development. It will also enable schools to extend their hours to better meet parents' needs.

The grant is open for applications, with the closing date set for midday on the 19th December 2024. Schools interested in funding can submit their applications through the official government portal, providing details of how the funds will be used to enhance early years provision. The selection process will prioritise projects that demonstrably impact the quality of early years education in disadvantaged areas. This funding is a key part of the government’s broader strategy to level up educational opportunities across the country and support parents by expanding access to affordable, high-quality childcare options.
