Grant News
The Baring Foundation has announced a new round of funding aimed at supporting legal actions that address racial injustice within the criminal justice system.
In this round of funding, the Foundation is seeking to fund activity which uses the law to:
- clarify or challenge legislation which disproportionately criminalises racialised people;
- address the harms caused by police in schools; and
- address the clampdown on activism in relation to issues of racial injustice (addressing the criminalisation of free speech and protest).
Eligible organisations can apply for grants of up to £50,000 for projects lasting up to 18 months, or up to £90,000 for initiatives extending over three years. The grants are intended to support legal actions that empower, persuade, or challenge systemic issues, rather than fund direct service delivery such as individual advice or support.
To be eligible, applicants need to:
- be an anti-racist organisation or have a demonstrable history of working on anti-racism;
- already be undertaking legal action activities to address racial injustice in the criminal legal system or be able to demonstrate pre-existing plans for doing so;
- undertake activities that will deliver benefit in the UK (applications for international work will not be considered);
- be a legally registered not-for-profit entity in the UK, preferably a charity;
- have at least one full year’s accounts; and
- have an income of under £1m a year.
Interested parties should arrange a preliminary discussion about eligibility by emailing baring.foundation@ing.com before the 30th May 2025. Following this, eligible organisations will need to complete a grant application form by the 11th June 2025.
