Grants to Uncover Hidden Working-Class Heritage (England)

Historic England is making grants available to fund community-led projects that will celebrate ‘overlooked’ working class histories.

Grants of up to £25,000 are available through ‘Everyday Heritage Grants: Celebrating Working Class Histories for projects that will celebrate the built or historic environment of working-class communities. However, Historic England are keen to fund a number of smaller projects up to £10,000.

The funding will support projects that allow people to share “overlooked” or “untold” stories of the place where they live, from council estates, pubs and clubs, to farms, factories and shipyards.

Below are some examples of previous projects that have been funded through the Everyday Heritage Grants scheme:

  • A project to create a new archive of photographs and oral histories of and by Bangladeshi people living in and around Brick Lane in Tower Hamlets.
  • A project to celebrate the heritage of boxing clubs around Halifax, West Yorkshire.
  • A project to produce a film about the lives of working class people in the area during the Second World War
  • A project to create a new educational resource for schools about the history of the local working class
  • A project to restore a former working class community center and turn it into a museum

Eligible applicants include:

  • All organisations and individuals including community interest groups, charities, schools and local authorities
  • Heritage England are especially interested in applications from groups and individuals that are not heritage organisations but can deliver heritage projects

A total of £400,000 is available.

Applications from previous Everyday Heritage Grants recipients will be considered.
