Grants of up to £1.5 Million Available to Regenerate Historic Buildings (Scotland)

Historic Environment Scotland (HES) has opened its Heritage & Place Programme, an area-based fund designed to drive community-led regeneration in Scotland’s historic places. Local authorities, national park authorities and experienced not-for-profit organisations can apply.

The programme runs in two stages.

  • During the Development Phase, HES normally covers up to half of the eligible costs, with no fixed award level.
  • In the Delivery Phase, grants range from £750,000 to £1.5 million, depending on the match funding and the scale of the scheme.

Projects must target clearly defined heritage areas recognised by the local authority. Applicants are expected to demonstrate strong community involvement, evidence of a need for repair and regeneration, a commitment to traditional skills training, and plans to build long-term local capacity.

Funding can support a broad mix of activities.

In the Development Phase, organisations may appoint staff or specialist consultants to carry out community engagement, skills and materials audits, and condition surveys of historic assets.

In the Delivery Phase, eligible work includes capital repair and resilience projects, adaptive reuse of historic buildings, traditional-skills training, community-heritage programmes and the creation or delivery of long-term management and maintenance strategies.

Expressions of Interest are open until 16 January 2026. Those accepted will be invited to submit a full Development Phase application by 7 August 2026.
