Funding Available for Library & Literacy Projects (UK & Ireland)

Better World Books raises funding through the sale of new and used books and reinvests a portion of its profits into literacy and education initiatives.

Through its Literacy Grants Programme, organisations including libraries, schools, nurseries, and community centres can apply for funding to deliver impactful literacy projects across the UK and Ireland.

The current funding round is themed Libraries & Literacy Access, and will support innovative, community-centred initiatives that strengthen library provision and expand access to reading opportunities.

Proposals should demonstrate how they will reduce barriers to reading and promote equitable access to books, particularly in underserved or marginalised communities.

The type of projects that could be supported include:

Improving Library Services -  Expanding book collections (including diverse and inclusive titles); mobile libraries or pop-up libraries in underserved areas; outreach projects, etc.

Early Years and School Literacy -  Book-gifting schemes for disadvantaged children; family literacy workshops; creating reading corners or classroom libraries, etc.

Community and Inclusion Projects - Literacy support for adults with low reading confidence; projects supporting refugees, migrants, or marginalised groups; bilingual or culturally representative book collections, etc

Innovative Access points - Digital access initiatives (eBooks, devices for borrowing); reading mentorship schemes; outdoor or alternative reading spaces, etc.

Funding levels will vary depending on the project's scope.

The deadline for applications is the 28th February 2026.
