The British Science Association has announced new school funding for the 2026/27 academic year, including £600 Curiosity Grants and Explore Kit Boxes to help young people engage with research and innovation. The schemes are funded by UK Research and Innovation and replace the former Kick Start Grants.

The funding can support a wide range of activities that help pupils explore research, science and innovation in practical or creative ways.

Examples include:

• hands-on science investigations and experiments;
• pupil-led research projects;
• activities linked to engineering, technology, maths or other STEM subjects;
• projects exploring research and innovation in the arts, humanities or social sciences;
• visits from researchers, scientists or other specialists;
• trips or visits linked to research and discovery;
• buying equipment and materials needed to deliver activities;
• staff cover or CPD where this is needed to support the project.

The emphasis is on giving young people meaningful opportunities to engage with research and innovation, particularly those who are underrepresented in these areas. Activities do not have to be limited to British Science Week itself, but funded work must be completed by 31 July 2027.
