Theatre operators can apply for capital grants of up to £20,000 to reduce their theatres' environmental impact. The grants can fund projects such as improving the building's management systems, installing more efficient water heaters, or installing green roofs, etc.
To be eligible to apply to the scheme, applicants must demonstrate that they:
- Own or manage theatres with titles or signed leases of more than 5 years on buildings in England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.
- Run a year-round programme of live performances of no less than 30 performances a year.
- Have a bona fide UK charitable or not-for-profit legal structure and be able to provide certified or audited accounts for at least two years.
- Operate theatres that achieve excellence through their production and programming or architectural significance.
The funding is being made available through the Theatres Trust in partnership with the Wolfson Foundation. To date, grants totalling more than £1,090,000 have been awarded to 66 projects for theatres to improve their buildings, including 52 grants aimed at improving environmental sustainability.
The closing date for applications is 12 noon on 11 September 2026.
