Grants of up to £7,000 Available for Community Projects that Encourage Walking and Wheeling (Greater Manchester)

Greater Manchester’s Walking and Wheeling Fund has reopened for 2025/26 to promote active lifestyles and reduce health inequalities across Greater Manchester.

The scheme, managed by Salford CVS on behalf of 10GM and supported by GM Moving and NHS Greater Manchester, is open to constituted Voluntary and Community organisations, community interest companies, and not-for-profit companies limited by guarantee.

Applicants are encouraged to demonstrate links with the health and care system, such as GP or midwife referrals.

This year’s funding round offers two levels of support. Small grants of up to £2,000 are available for pilot or short-term projects, while medium grants of up £7,000 will support organisations to deliver larger and more sustainable initiatives.

Priority will be given to projects working with those least active, including people with disabilities or long-term health conditions, individuals from lower socio-economic backgrounds, women—particularly pregnant women or those with infants—and adults aged over 65.

Applications close at midday on Friday, 26 September 2025, with successful projects able to run until May 2026.

Projects funded previously include:

Walking and Wheeling Groups for Women with Health Conditions
Changing Life Directions received a grant of approximately £2,180 to deliver walking sessions in their local area. This helped women with arthritis and type 2 diabetes build confidence and increase their walking frequency.

Mosque-Linked Walking Initiatives
The Yuvanis Foundation worked with mosque imams in Oldham and Rochdale to cultivate a culture of daily walking to local mosques. Imams acted as “Walking Champions” to encourage regular participation—reducing reliance on car journeys and fostering community wellbeing.

Inclusive Walking for New Parents and People with Disabilities
Examples include walk-and-talk groups for expectant parents and new mothers in Bury and Salford, as well as accessible walking and wheeling sessions in parks for people with disabilities.
