The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government has opened a competition offering up to £970,000 for an organisation, or group of organisations, to design and build a national Muslim War Memorial in England.
The memorial will honour the contributions of Muslim service personnel who fought alongside Britain in the First and Second World Wars. It is intended to serve as both a place for reflection and an educational resource to raise public awareness and encourage interfaith dialogue.
Eligibility:
- an organisation registered as a charity with the Charity Commission
- a charitable incorporated organisation registered with Companies House and the Charity Commission
- a company limited by guarantee registered with Companies House
- a Community Interest Company registered with Companies House
- a public sector organisation, such as a local authority
Proposals must identify a location for the memorial, outline how planning permission will be secured, and present credible construction timelines alongside engagement plans with Muslim and armed forces communities.
It is estimated that some 400,000 Muslim soldiers fought in the First World War alone.
Applications open on 10 June and close on 21 July 2026. The winner is expected to be announced in October 2026, with funding allocated in stages across capital and revenue budgets.
