Grants of up to £35,000 Available to Smaller Museums to Loan Significant Works of Art (UK)

Smaller museums across the UK will have the opportunity to apply for grants of up to £35,000 to borrow works of outstanding quality and significance from national and major lending institutions.

The Weston Loan Programme with Art Fund is funded by the Garfield Weston Foundation and has been running since 2017. It has already awarded £1.3m to 78 museums, helping to increase access to notable objects, share resources across the UK, and develop relationships between museums.

Grants can be used to cover 100% of the practical elements of strategic loans projects, such as securing a loan, displaying a loan, and maximising the impact of a loan. The programme also funds activities to develop the skills of museum professionals.

Eligible institutions include UK public museums, galleries, historic houses, libraries and archives that:

  • Have permanent collections
  • Are regional and/or run by a local authority, university, or have independent/charitable trust status
  • Are open for at least half the week for at least six months of the year
  • Are at least provisionally accredited under the Arts Council Accreditation Scheme

Small and contemporary arts spaces and other non-collecting institutions may also be considered, provided they meet the aims of the programme.

The closing date for applications is the 15th December 2023.
