Community-based organisations can apply for funding through the International Tree Foundation’s 2026 UK Community Tree Planting Programme.
The programme supports projects that create and conserve indigenous trees, woodlands and habitats, increase biodiversity and involve communities in tree planting. It also aims to raise awareness of the environmental and human benefits of trees while promoting social cohesion and inclusion.
Eligible applicants include schools, community groups, social enterprises, non-governmental organisations and parish councils. Applicants must have a bank account in the organisation’s name and signed permission from the relevant landowner or manager.
Projects must be based in the UK and plant between 100 and 10,000 trees annually in publicly accessible locations, including parks, school grounds, rights of way and community-managed spaces.
Funding is available at a maximum rate of £2.15 per tree, including protection and mulch. Projects will also receive two maintenance payments of £0.10 per tree during the first and second summers after planting.
Projects must plant indigenous species, although traditional fruit trees and appropriate “honorary native” species may also be considered. Applicants must involve local people in planting and demonstrate clear plans for maintenance and long-term sustainability.
Priority may be given to projects involving children, young adults, or vulnerable groups; creating biodiversity habitats; conserving soil and water; supporting rewilding, natural regeneration, or agroforestry; addressing tree pests, diseases, or climate adaptation; or increasing urban tree cover.
The first assessment round will take place on 1 October 2026, with the main grants awarded shortly afterwards. Subsequent awards will be made on a first-come, first-served basis, subject to available funding.
The final application deadline is 11 December 2026.
