£47 Million Government Investment to Support Peatland Protection & Restoration (England)
The UK Government has announced almost £47 million in funding to support peatland protection and restoration across England.
The investment will help reduce carbon emissions, protect rural communities from the risks of wildfire and flooding, and support local economies.
Three different schemes are being funded to address different challenges across England’s varied peat landscapes:
- The Lowland Peat Water Implementation Grant (£36 million, delivered by the Environment Agency) funds local projects and infrastructure that raises and manages water tables in lowland peat soils. Applications can be submitted until 18 September 2026.
- The Paludiculture and Wetter Farming Fund (£10 million, delivered by Natural England) funds research into growing and harvesting crops on wetter peat soils and developing markets for them. Applications can be submitted until 21 August 2026.
- The Peatland Restoration Sector Capacity Grant (£1.15 million, delivered by Defra) funds training, apprenticeships, equipment, and community engagement to expand the workforce needed for peatland restoration. Applications can be submitted until 23 July.
The three schemes are part of the wider 2026–2030 Peat Programme announced in the Environmental Improvement Plan, worth approximately £85 million in total.
