Funding to Help Communities Explore Health and Wellbeing Through Data (UK)

Health Data Research UK has announced that its Take the Lead: Data Champions Community Grants programme is open for applications.

Health Data Research UK (HDR UK) is the UK’s national institute for health data science, bringing together researchers, healthcare organisations and communities to use health data to improve people’s health and care.

The programme offers £3,000 grants to up to 20 community leaders across the UK.

The programme aims to help communities explore how data can support better health and wellbeing, while giving community leaders opportunities to build skills, confidence and links with data scientists.

Funding is available for activities exploring brain health, cancer, environment and health, heart health, sustainable and healthy diets, and young people’s mental health. Projects should use creative, community-led approaches tailored to local interests and needs.

The types of data could include

  • National statistics from organisations such as the ONS and NHS.
  • Personal health journals, recording physical or mental wellbeing.
  • GP and hospital information, such as blood tests, scans and consultations.
  • Shopping data, such as supermarket purchasing patterns.
  • Community surveys and conversations, including polls, social media feedback, art and other forms of community insight.
  • Environmental and social data, such as air quality, water quality and access to green space.

Key highlights:

  • Applicants must be based at an established UK community organisation with its own bank account
  • Individuals cannot apply
  • Priority audiences include people from low-income or minority ethnic backgrounds, young people aged 11–25, people over 65, rural communities and people experiencing digital exclusion
  • Activities must run between 8 February and 20 June 2027
  • Attendance at an in-person welcome event in Bristol on 23 February 2027 is compulsory.

Applications are made through an online form and close at 12 noon on 2 November 2026. Successful applicants will be notified in December 2026. Applicants must show that they can act as a data champion in their community and share learning with colleagues and local audiences.
