Funding to Increase Peatland Restoration Sector Capacity (England)

The Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs has launched a £1.15 million fund to expand the capacity of England’s peatland restoration sector.

The Peatland Restoration Sector Capacity Grant Scheme will run from 2026 to 2030, supporting the workforce, skills, and infrastructure needed to restore degraded peatlands.

Grants of up to £20,000 per year, for up to two years, are available to help organisations overcome barriers to restoration. Please note that funding in subsequent years will be restricted to one-year grants up to £20,000.

The scheme is open to any organisation involved in peatland restoration. Applicants will need to demonstrate how their proposal meets one or more of the following criteria:

  • increasing the size or skills of the local restoration workforce through apprenticeships and internships
  • attracting new entrants into the sector, such as raising the awareness of peatland careers within local schools, universities or the community
  • attracting private investment into a peatland restoration project
  • progressing collaboration with other organisations – for example, subsidising the cost of specialist machinery to be used in a ‘machinery ring’, whereby machinery is shared and leased between several stakeholders

For the 2026 funding round a total of £250,000 is available. (For the remaining years of the scheme the budget will be £300,000.00 each year.)

The closing date for applications is 23 July 2026.
