The Ministry of Defence has announced funding for an official oral history project documenting the experiences of women veterans in the UK Armed Forces.
The Office for Veterans’ Affairs, within the Ministry of Defence and responsible for delivering the UK Government’s Veterans Strategy, is offering up to £250,000 to fund one project over two years. The aim is to create a digitised oral history collection that captures women veterans’ experiences from recruitment and service through to transition into civilian life.
UK Higher Education Institutions, registered charities, not-for-profit organisations and UK research institutes can apply. Applicants must be UK-based and have strong financial governance, data management, and project management, as well as experience in research, heritage, oral history, or archival projects.
The project must be delivered in partnership with Imperial War Museums and include at least 40 recorded and transcribed interviews. Funding can support activities such as participant recruitment, interviews, transcription, digital resources, exhibitions, public events, educational materials and a final project report.
Applications will be assessed through a two-stage process, with shortlisted applicants invited to interview and present their proposal. Applications close at 11:59pm on 22 September 2026.
