Grant News
The British Gas Energy Trust, an independent charitable organisation funded by British Gas, is offering grants aimed at alleviating energy debt for households across England, Scotland, and Wales. These grants are designed to support individuals facing financial hardship by clearing outstanding domestic gas and electricity debts.
The grants available are:
- British Gas Energy Support Fund: This fund is open to British Gas customers with either credit or pre-payment meter accounts. Eligible applicants can receive grants to clear energy debts ranging from a minimum of £50 (for pre-payment customers) or £250 (for credit customers) up to a maximum of £2,000.
- Individuals and Families Fund: This fund is available to pre-payment meter customers, both of British Gas and other suppliers. Applicants must have energy debts between £50 and £1,700. It's important to note that customers of certain suppliers with their own support funds—such as OVO, E.ON, EDF, Scottish Power, Octopus, Shell Energy, SSE, Utilita, and Utility Warehouse—must first apply to their respective funds and may apply to this fund only if declined.
To be eligible to apply:
- Applicants must reside in England, Scotland, or Wales.
- Must be seeking a grant to clear an outstanding debt on a current or open gas, electricity, or dual fuel energy account in their name, related to their main residence.
- Must not have received a grant from the British Gas Energy Trust within the specified period (12 months for the Energy Support Fund; 2 years for the Individuals and Families Fund).
- Must have received help from a money advice agency or used the Trust's self-help Benefit Calculator tool within the last 6 months.
Before applying, individuals are required to seek money advice to ensure they receive appropriate guidance tailored to their financial situation. Applications can be submitted online through the British Gas Energy Trust's official website.
There is no closing date for applications. The Trust however reserves the right to close the application portal with little or no notice once funds have been expended. Therefore, eligible applicants are encouraged to apply promptly
